Travel by Train by J. B. Priestly Summary and Questions
(i) Why does the author envy the mighty sleepers?
Answer:-
On travel by train is authored by J. B. Priestly. When J. B. Priestly travel by the train, he sees many people's traveling in the train and he just observed them and their actions. J. B. Priestly envy the mighty sleepers. J. B. Priestly envy the mighty sleepers. Priestly says that there is a type of traveller who sleeps in the railway compartment as soon as they get settled. When they enter the train and go to sleep they forget everything for sometime. They wake up only a few minutes ago before the train reaches their destination.
Mighty sleepers forget everything and pass the time in sleeping. When another traveller are getting bored they are lost in the adventures of dream. And get up just two minutes before the train arrives at their station. They get down alert and fresh. They are the lords of travel. Therefore Priestly envy the mighty sleepers.
(ii) How did the nurse describe Nicola and Japaco's role in the resistance movement ?
Answer:-
Nicola and Japaco were two brothers. Nicola was 13 years old and Japaco was 12 years old. The author was on the sight seeing tour. They reach to the Verona city. The two boys were selling fruits. The driver warned writer to not to buy fruits from them.
The boys were willingly working hard. They would work under the hot sun and in the long evening. They shined shoes, sold fruits, hawked newspaper, guided tourists round, etc. The writer thought that the brothers may be saving a lot of money because both of them worked very hard day and night. They never spent on cloths and little spent for eating.
When writer goes to the hospital. The Writer sees a nurse and ask about them. Nurse asked him to come inside and took him upstairs. It was a hospital. The nurse took to a ward. The writer saw through the glass partition that the two boys were sitting at the besides of a girl named Lucia. She was the sister of that two boys. She was suffering from T.B. and was admitted to the hospital. It was the nurse who gave the writer all this information. He asked her to tell him all that she know the boys. She was eager to do so. From her the writer learnt that the two brother and their sister were alone in the world. Their father was a singer. he was hilled in the beginning of the war. Thereafter also destroyed their home and thrown them on the streets. The sister Lucia had once been a singer like her well-known father. But all of them suffered greatly. They were without food and clothes. The cold winter had affected them. They somehow remained alive in a shelter built by them. Then the army captured the town of Verona and ruled it cruelly for three years. They joined the resistant movement and proved themselves very useful. In that time sister Lucia contacted T.B. Therefore the two boys worked hard to save their sister.
(iii) How does Bagchi tell us about the "jeep" episode ?
ANSWER :-
Bagachi's father was a Government servant. His father had a jeep given by the government but he never misused it for his own family. The writer had received a lesson out of it. He and his brothers could sit into the jeep only when it stood stationary. It was a lesson to the children which should be taken by everyone. However some people don't seen to learn lesson. The writer also learned to pay respect to the drivers and not to call him as a driver but call him using his name. The writer and his brothers were taught to be good persons.
(iv) How did Booker T. Washington find shelter for the night in Richmond ?
ANSWER :-
The writer could rich the city of Richmond, Virginia by walking, begging, rides in wagons and in carts after a number of days. Now he was 82 miles away from Hampton. He was tired, hungry, dirty and late at night reached the city of Richmond. For the first time he was seeing a large city. When he reached Richmond there was no money with him. He did not understand which way to go. He applied for lodging at many places but without money he was so exhausted that he could not walk. Tired and hungry he reached extreme physical exhaustion, he found a place under the sidewalk. Without coming into notice of anybody, the writer had sleep there at night upon the ground with satchel of clothing for pillow. The next morning he felt somewhat refreshed but extremely hungry because from many days he could not get sufficient amount of food.
He happened to meet a captain of a big ship. He asked him for some work of unloading the writer then did the unloading work. He laboured hard although he was very hungry. Then in the end of the day he could take a breakfast. For many days thereafter the writer got work from the kind captain. He saved some and once again started for Hampton soon. The writer passed night under the sidewalks throughout his stay in Richmond.
